My new Macbook is making a swish sound every now and then while it's running. The computer is normally silent, except for these occasional "swooshig" sounds. Any ideas on whether this could be a problem or not? It literally sounds like a quick swoosh (think how a basketball is audibly depicted going through a hoop), although it's louder than the fan whirling (that's the best way I can describe it).

Also when I have to bring it back from a sleep state the hard drive (I think) makes a cranking / revving noise - is this normal? It comes right back to life except for this noise.

I am not too familiar with the "swoosh" noise you're talking about - can't really replicate it. The cracking and revving noise that occurs when you "activate" the system is normal - this is very likely the feed-in optical drive starting up, similar to the "sssssss" noise that a large-bay optical drive makes on a normal full-size desktop.

I actually talked to a friend of mine late last night who's owned a mac or two and when I described the sound as somebody breathing in / exhaling she knew exactly what I was talking about.

She said hers have always done it, so I shouldn't worry about it. As long as it's not constantly doing it I should be alright.

Thanks for the info about the drive Kram. It looks like so far *knock on wood* nothing is wrong.

Mine makes a sound (similar to a light saber swish) when I pick it up rapidly (or swing it from side to side just to hear the sound). I wonder if it isn't the HHD drop sensor parking the drive heads.
