hello, I have an VANTEC nst-375lx nexstar lx nas network external enclosure with seagate 160GB HDD.
I connected it to my d-link 655 router but I still can't access it. Support from vantec says:
No software needed to be install to use our LX enclosure. You just need to log into the LX enclosure web control interface to setup the network settings. The web control interface is part of the LX enclosure firmware. Please follow the manual to setup the LX enclosure on the network. Please note you cannot access the web control interface when connecting USB, and you cannot have both USB and network connection connected at the same time.

I run Vista. So, does anybody know how to make it FTP friendly?
Thank you

If on your internal network, all you would need to do is share the drive or folder.

If you want to set up an FTP server, you'll need FTP server software. Here's a free one:

One "gotcha" I've noticed with FTP server software is that "passive mode" needs to be enabled for everything to operate correctly. Some software doesn't enable that by default.

[edit]: Also, in your router, you'll want to forward the FTP port to a statically assigned IP address for this particular computer. I'd suggest a port other than 21, since that is sometimes a security risk. So, you'll have to change the port number in the FTP server software and forward that same port in the router.

You wouldn't be able to find an FTP server like that. Internally, you'll have to use the IP address and port number to access it. Externally, You'll have to get the IP of your router and the port number for the FTP.

Here's an easy way to find out your external IP: http://whatismyip.com/
