Hi, i'm new to PCMechanic and would like to know if anyone can help me. It started about 2 weeks ago my father downloaded a fake norton anti-virus program (source www.storageprotector.com) and it infested our computer and made over 17,000 POS temporary files which i manually got rid of, but only after I used microsoft remote assistance which killed the virus. So the virus itself is gone, so are the files it created but the red "x" is still there, can anyone help?

If that "Red X" is still there I doubt very much if your machine is clear of that virus completely.
Please can you tell us what operating system you have and what antivirus and spyware scanners you have?
~moderator note~
I moved your thread to the securities forum as I believe this to be a security problem rather than a harddrive problem.

Download and install AVG7.5free, this is a free antivirus program for personal use that is highly reccomended around here, another good program that helps rid your system of spyware is SpyBot Search and Destroy.
Both of these applications are free and can be found on www.downloads.com

Try a program called TweakUI from Microsoft. It has a "Rebuild Icons" option.
