ok i got 4g of ram and 3.0 dual core amd. I was having these problems before what im about to say happened, but the frequency of these events just sky rocketed. When I built my system i used my 2-3yo 550 pow supply. One day it burned out on me and so i ordered a new one. 700w pow supply. I dont know if this is whats causing my problems or not but programs just stop working and my cpu usage goes to zilch and it just freezes up.
I just hit the reset button and it works fines until it happens again. Im not overlocking or anything like that if someone knows whats going on please help this is getting frustrating

Sometimes when a PSU dies it will damage or kill other components. I would test the RAM using Memtest86+ or swapping out the sticks to see if any are faulty.

Actually since vista just sent me a new update i havent had a single lock up freeze or crash. and i tried using my other hard drive also, nothing was happening on my XP drive. i think there was a probelm with one of the vista patches i downloaded or something but it works fine now.

I finally found the main reason of my crashes. It was my onboard soundcard, I had to disable it in order to stop crashing. Im sorry for the late post but if this is happening to a few other people Id like them to know as this was extremely frustrating to me to narrow it down to this.
If your motherboard uses realtek onboard soundcard, my version was ALC883, and you are having crashing issues. Disable it in BIOS and you have a temporary fix to your crashes and/or system freezes.
I would like to know though because I am using this as a temporary fix if any one knows of a better fix so I can use my speakers down the line. I use a headset anyways so this does not have much of an impact on me at the moment.

Perhaps a driver update would help.

I would also suggest a driver update. Vista, in my experiences, has some issues with sound drivers.

where would you guys suggest I go for a driver of that nature?
is there a place that has vista 64-bit verified drivers for this kind of thing, excluding the manufacturer site?

Only place I know of is the motherboard manufacturer.
