I just finished setting up my new rig (it's the third time I built a PC but things seem to have changed a lot since the last time).

8800gt
q6600 cpu
Asus P5KC mobo
Cooler Master 690 case
Cooler Master Real Power M620

When I start the machine up I get lights and fans but no beeps... and a black screen.

Any ideas?

Make sure it's out of the case when you try this. If you still can't get it to post, then reply back.

Well I did it (despite the fact that the very idea scared the life out of me!)... no improvement I'm afraid. I have lights, I have fans, but I have no display.

Also I tried the system with another GPU and I still get no display.

Could try to clear the BIOS.
Make sure the 24 pin and 4 pin power connections are plugged into the motherboard.
Check to make sure the ram sticks are fully seated and latched in.

What memory are you using?

And is it in the correct slot?

I tried clearing the CMOS as it suggests in the manual:

"Turn off PC unplug power cord
Remove onboard battery
Move the jumper cap from pins 1-2 to 2-3 keep the cap on pins 2-3 for 5-10 seconds then move the cap back
Reinstall battery
Plug the power cord and turn on the computer

now even my fans don't spin!

Please ignore this... In my stressed state I managed to put the jumper cap back wrong. I've put it back properly and the fans are still spinning.

It might not be bad ram, just need to tell us the specs of it.

What speed and cas. From there you might be able to set it manually in the bios and still use what you have.

The old ram was 4200 444-12

Yeah. I would probably get some different ram.

Look for DDR2 800 cas 5.
