Just built my PC, not working

Hello,

I just put together my PC (a lot has changed since my last one 6 years ago!) The fans power up, the CDROM drive blinks, but I get no output on the monitor, not sure what is going on. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Welcome to PCMech.

First, we need some specs on everything you used.

Second, double check all of your connections and make sure the board has power anywhere it needs it.

OK, here goes. For power to the board, I have the 24 and the 4 pin connectors hooked up. No beep signals by the way, the only stuff that happens is fans go on, cd rom spins, makes weird spinning sound like it's trying to read the xp disc, and then occasionally the fans stop and it seems like it is resetting or something.

Mem: 4 1 Gig Sticks DDR2 Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400

I would try it out of the case like the link Alaron posted says. Also, try with just one stick of memory.

One other note, just looked inside the PC as I turned it on, the heatsink fan spins for 2 seconds, then stops. Then spins again, then stops. Seems to be in sync with the first noise the cdrom makes.

Does this sound like a bad power supply?

Could be I had a Antec go bad once and did the same exact think yours is doing.. To rule it out you need another one.. Also this being a intel build, make sure the heatsink is installed properly. Many newbies have had issues like this and the problem being the heaksink not installed properly..

The Antec Earthwatts power supplies are good quality, but anything is possible.

If the system still won't work after you try the out of the case procedure, you need to substitute parts.

Try with one stick of RAM at a time, you could have a dead stick.

Then try another power supply.

Try setting the RAM speed to DDR2-667 if you can (with one stick...then save settings, shut down, and put the rest in). Sometimes chipsets can't handle 4 sticks at full speeds...

Oh behalf of Fastwrin:

Is it normal for the PC to operate when I switch the order of the RAM sticks? Basically I switched them up in a different order and they work now. Just want to make sure I don't have a bad stick and should return it.

Test the RAM with Memtest86+.

If it doesn't pass memtest at the rated speed, then try lowering like was already suggested to 667.
