no display on startup

hello, just built my second computer but i do not get a display on startup, but the motherboard green light, cpu fan, chassis fan, cdrom, and hard drive power up.

i do not get any motherboard beeps either,

Are you using onboard video?

Are these all new components? ie, the motherboard and PSU?

I would say re-check all your connections again especially the 4 pin power to your CPU, disconnect any peripherals that you don't need like your DVDRom and start from basics. (ie mobo, CPU and RAM) it should really beep with just these components (unless possibly the motherboard is grounding to the case).

Apart from testing the motherboard outside of the case with just the basic componentry it should show you pretty quickly what might be at fault.

yes, im using onboard video and all new parts . i took all components out and tested cpu and fan, ram, with psu ,still got no display. not sure how to jump start the system with a screw driver though. i tried starting the system without the 4 pin 12v connector and the cpu fan spun with more power (appeared physically faster), is this normal?

Cricket's post is the way to go... been a while since I have seen that thread. ;)

Anyway, I would say that the CPU fan would have been a little faster given the load on the PSU was reduced when you removed that connector. Now be sure to leave that plugged in or you aren't going to get very far anyway.

Bridging the two pins with the tip of a flathead screwdriver for the power to kick in to boot it is also explained in Cricket's link.

In my experience about 7 out of 10 new build initial failures are due to incorrect placement of connectors to the motherboard, mainly from the case... they can be a pain. Be sure to follow your motherboard and case wiring diagrams closely, sometimes the terminology does not quite match but if you get something around the wrong way or try to set up too much at once it can seem like some major failure has taken place when it can be something quite simple as a single connector on the wrong pin.

reseated cpu and fan, and ram. still no display. i dont have another motherboard to test parts out. should i try some new ram or power supply?

Is the motherboard out of the case on a non-conductive surface with only the CPU, heatsink, video card, RAM, keyboard, PC case speaker (unless your motherboard has an on-board piezo speaker), power supply and monitor assembled together? It's really important that the motherboard is out of the case when you're troubleshooting a problem like this.

Do you have all the necessary power connectors plugged in? You should have the 20 pin and a 4 pin plugged into the main motherboard power connector as well as the other 4 pin 12v power connector near the CPU socket.

And that motherboard doesn't have a piezo speaker on it so are you using a PC case speaker plugged onto the proper pins of the front panel header?

yes all the connectors are plugged in firmly, I've successfully built a computer before but am not so lucky with this second build. i powered up using the screw driver but still no display and tried powering up using the case power button wire, i also have the speaker cable from the case connected to the motherboard and get no beeps.

At this point all you know is your computer doesn't power up with the core components so one of those components is the cause of your troubles. To determine which one it is will involve substituting parts with compatible parts to see which one is faulty, defective or DOA.

In situations like this I replace the power supply with a known working one.

also i read the asus motherbaord manual and it says the lga775 socket is designed for intel core 2 quad/core 2 extreme/core 2 duo/ pentium D/ pentium 4 and Celeron processors, is celeron compatibility the same as celeron D compatibility ?

also, should i be buying ram listed in the qualified vendors list in the asus manual?

On the ASUS P5KPL-VM CPU support page the Intel Celeron D 336 Prescott is not listed as a supported processor.

ok i just took out the ram, and finally got some beeps, 1 beep followed by 2 quick beeps. When i had the ram installed i got no beeps at all so do i have a ram problem?

i read that 1 long beep then 2 short beeps is a video problem, but this happened when the ram was out.

also, the beeps are continuous

so its 1 - 2, 1 - 2 ...

You need to get hold of a compatible processor before you can say anything about the other parts. If you're wanting a celeron-level processor, you need to look at the newer Conroe celerons - all three are supported by your motherboard.

sheesh, i dont think i can RMA the processor i bought with newegg (got my parts 1/7/08) , newegg lists my motherboard as supporting celeron D too, oh well. would the celeron D cause any damage to a motherboard only powered up for a few seconds each time for a post check

also, would intel still take back the Celeron D or am i out $ 48 dollars

Newegg DOES list that board as having support for the Celeron D chips, which obviously contradicts what ASUS themselves say. The problem is that the board supports 1333/1066/800Mhz FSB processors, whereas the Celly Ds are 533Mhz. I'd get in touch with Newegg directly over this - after only 6 days you should be fine for an RMA, but it can't hurt to explain the reasons behind your return (their incorrect MB description).

And no, your motherboard shouldn't be damaged.

I'm getting 1 long beep and 2 shorter ones, over and over again.

Now, I've read that 1 long beep and 2 short ones actually has something to do with the video card and that continuous beeps have something to do with RAM ...

They don't really think they should clarify what kind of "continuous beeps" they mean ...

The manual doesn't even contain any list regarding to what beeps mean what...
