Hi,

Im trying to access a website but Im getting the following message.

The requested URL could not be retrieved

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While trying to retrieve the URL: ftp://(ftp name here)

The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for (ftp name here)
The dnsserver returned:

No DNS records
This means that:

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.

When I try to access it at home rather than on the network at work it works absolutely fine so I know I have the correct ftp name. Iv tried clearing the Temporary Internet Files, cookies but its still not working. I am using IE7 here but iv tried on on Firefox as well.

Any ideas? I havent got a clue!!

Thank u very much for any help

On the problem machine, go to a command prompt and enter:

ping [ftp site address]

You should get something like:
Reply from 12.34.56.89 in 32 ms

i have tried pinging the site and i get a requested time out. i have the same problem on all the machines - i can access the site ok through IE6 but not the ftp of it. we have a cache pilot but i dont know what to change in there if it is that causing the problem.

cheers for your help

Since you can access the site from another machine, it sounds like you have something blocking the DNS in the problem location.
I'm not sure what "cache pilot" is, but if it has anything to do with DNS, try disabling and testing the connection.

Could you possible be behing a firewall which is blocking connection to port 21 (usually ftp). Can you do : start->cmd->ftp [site address] and connect to the site?

try ------------ ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/
if it works then use the same syntax
If it does not work then your pc is not configured for FTP (including the pc with its own firewall settings) or the company firewall blocks it

You can just type the address in the address bar alone and see if you at least get a website
