Can I take a recently formatted 40Gb IDE drive with Windows XP Home already on it and put it into a new system? What kind of problems could I expect?

The OS will have imprinted the hardware of the old system, so that works only if the hardware is exactly the same on the other box.

Just reformat and reinstall once it's in the new system. Back up any data you need from that drive, if there is any.

If the old system is running, you can try setting the IDE drivers to standard. Also, a repair install may save your program installations and data versus a complete reinstall.

Would the new system POST or would I just get error messages?

Once you unistall the IDE drivers and install the standard ones in device manager it should boot fine.. Then when you boot into windows you will have to call MS to have it activated on the new system.
