Ok, well, you know those website where you can get something "custom made", and they give you like 20 little check-boxes or bubbles?

And then, whenever you click one, the "Price: $xxx" changes?

examples:
System 76 (small system builder) http://system76.com/product_info.php?cPath=29&products_id=67

Puget Systems (another small sys builder)
http://www.pugetsystems.com/certified_sys.php?sys_id=59

System 76's site has the little popup box that follows you. How would i go about adding such a thing to my website?

Also, both of them have the price auto-update itself. I think this may be using CGI, but i am but a novice in web development.

Any more experienced web devs that can help me out here? a few pointers at least?

[I have my own LAMP server set up, but i have little expertise in the actual making of the website: I also have a minimal background in C++, plus the HTML i have self taught myself.]

CGI is perl. Both of these use PHP.

For a shopping cart solution you can look at OSCommerce (http://www.oscommerce.com/).
