Server In Closet

I recently aquired a old 733 Mhz computer from a friend and i am now utilizing it as a ftp server and running Seti@ home on it. The Cpu fan has a small fan that creates a lot of noise and i am wondering if it would be a problem if i store it in a closet so i wont be able to hear it.

Since it's not a powerful server, I think it might be okay for it to be in the closet as it may not overheat. However there is not much air circulation going on in there, so you do risk overheating. Have you tried decreasing the fan speed?

There is no real way to decrease the fan speed i tried speed fan but it doesnt have any sensors in it.

I done think its hot at this moment maybe 80F Temp

You don't need to relegate it to the closet.

There are also fan controllers that you can use to slow down a fan...they are basically a fancy potentiometer....the downside is you risk burning up your CPU. Another alternative is to buy a larger heatsink for your CPU which turns at lower RPM's and is more efficient...therefore being quieter.

You certainly don't want to use a fan controller on your CPU. It doesn't take long for one to fry itself without the proper cooling.
