I've been truing to fin Vista drivers for the on-board sound on my mobo which is an Intel D865PERL. Nothing on the Intel site. The audio is Soundmax 4.

The only real problem I have is that if you pause sound, it sticks. In other words playing a song WMP and pausing for more than a few seconds causes the song to freeze at that point. You have to re-start WMP to un-stick. Switching between programs causes the sound to drop too. So if I am converting an old LP to a digital file when I switch between Cakewalk and WMP I lose the sound and have to re-configure the speakers to get it back.

Anyway...it doesn't look like there are vista drivers for this chipset anywhere, and there aren't likely to be. Anyone out there think differently?

If no drivers, anyone care to recommend a cheap soundcard that is Vista compatible? I don"t need audiophile sound, just want to hear the music. They will be working with Vista Home Premium, on the aforementioned Inter D865PERL and playing through some harman/kardon desktop speakers (2.0) that I think came with an old, now retired Dell.

Thanks in advance.

I'm running Vista Home Premium 32bit on that same MOBO. Vista installed the drivers for me but I don't know where they came from.
They show up as SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio Driver in Device Manager. They might work for you?

That is actually an XP driver that was semi-working for me. One problem was that I would lose audio if I paused music when using WMP. The fix was to reconfigure the speakers in control panel. Losing audio would also occur if I switched between applications while using the audio. For example switching between WMP and Cakewalk. The same solution corrected the issue.

The problem was it is tiresome always reconfiguring the speakers.

I purchased this cheap soundcard and installed it last night. Let Windows install the drivers. Works perfectly. I can pause audio and switch applications all I want.

One side issue is that I cannot uninstall the Soundmax control panel now. Because "its not compatible with my OS". Vista won't let me remove it from start up either. So it just sits there is systray....doing nothing. I'll start a new thread for help on that.

Sound cutting off spontaneously on Windows Vista. This problem concerns users who are using the SoundMAX Integrated Audio Driver.

Symptoms include:
- Progress bars freezing in music and movies
- Sound being disabled after a song
- Sound not working again after pausing a song
- Random occurances of sound disabling

For fix to the SoundMAX sound problems go to this link http://vistarewired.com/2007/02/06/sound-cutting-off-problem (my response date: May 14th, 2008 at 11:07 am).

Hi Zdenek:

Thanks for the reply. Thuis is actually a pretty old post. I was using exactly the process your link points to, to kick the Soundmax back into functioning mode, but is was still a pain in the butt.

Ultimately to fix the problem I went to the Egg and purchased a cheap soundcard that worked for my set up (2.1) and was Vista certified. About $12 delivered. No problems since then. The sound is actually a little better than the onboard chipset.
