I have a NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP 8x video card in my emachine T4080. This computer worked fine for a couple years at least. But laterly it was seemingly getting hot running my online game. It would make a slight noise and go to black...no video input. I tried the monitor on my other puter, works fine.

I have the original and a extra cooling fan on my tower.

I had to restart my computer and video would work. This occured for a couple months. Last week it made a slight noise and was again black--no video. I took the video card out, the fan had a little dust--cleaned it out.

I tried starting the computer without the video card but still no video. I thought it would revert to the onboard video. It didn't and of course it doesn't work with the video card either.

I read you can reset the motherboard to original by moving the jumpers and battery. May this work for me to get the puter working or is this a serious issue....i.e. need new motherboard?

Thanks.

Dave

You need your manual.
If you can't locate it at home download it from the emachines site.

Are you getting any diagnostic beeps at boot up?
Did you get any when the video card failed?

Is everything starting up normally and you just can't "see" anything ?

Yes returning the bios to factory defaults might fix your problem, since that board automatically disables the on board video when a card is installed, but it's possible you have another problem which is why we need more information about what's happening at boot up.
