Help!! start up problems?????

WIndows gets as far as the the screen with the loading bar, the point before the blue welcome screen and suddenly keeps restarting?? DOes the usual BIOS detecting drives etc.. But doesnt even get as far as the welcome screen. and keeps restarting?? Yet repeating this problem until the screen appears where there is multiple options - I selected " last known configuration that worked" still doest start up, yet repeating above steps, second time round - select " start windows normally" - windows loads, yehaaa!! - But what is causing this problem anyway?

I'm using windows XP home.

Control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery - uncheck "restart on error". Next time it happens, it should bluescreen instead of restarting, read the bluescreen for clues.

Hi GLc. I did what you suggested and folllowed your intructions, but I don't see the option " restart on error". What i see is settings, so i click on the settings tab then another window appears "Start up and Recovery" Here i see 5 boxes of which 4 are checked, 5th one being "Automatically restart" which is unchecked"? :confused:

That's the one. If it still restarts, you have a hardware issue, not a software issue.

Its starting up as normal., so see how it goes. I just want to say that i have just recently installed a memory card reader writer, could this be the cause of the problem?

If the machine was working fine prior to the addition of the device, that's the place to start.

As stated, remove it, and if the machine boots fine, you've found the problem source.

Hi all, Sorry for the late reply. I removed the hardware by unplugging it from the mobo USB header, and Window seems to be starting up, no problems! IS the memory card reader dodgy, and why is this causing my system to be unstable?

3) (or your system if it's a proprietary machine).

ie; Gateway 310S Desktop, eMachines t1115 Desktop, HP Vectra VL400D Desktop, Hewlett-Packard (Compaq) Presario V2000 (EC436AV#ABA) Laptop, etc, etc.

The device is a unbranded 17 in 1 card reader/writer.

The Mobo is a GIgabyte - GA-K8N Ultra-Sli
