I have tried a repair with the troubleshooter and i get a yellow triangle at DEFAULT GATEWAY, code 81000306 if this means anything to anybody, cannot get Hotmail or sign in to live messenger.

Further info, Although i can eventually get live hotmail to run i find that picture attachments take forever to open. ie a JPEG used to open in seconds, now takes several minutes.
Any ideas as what could cause this slowdown please?

Sometimes it could be the server. Or your internet connection.
Have you tried a different web browser? Try clearing your internet history and cache as well.

Cleared all, web browser works OK, When i get in to live hotmail it all works OK, send and receive but opening attachments takes forever where it used to be fast. ie instead of kbs now opens at 200/300bytes/sec. What could cause this slow down. just checked ADSL getting 2Mbps.

OK i now know it is my computer as i have tried hotmail from another address and it is perfect.
So the question is what can slow down logging on to Messenger and hotmail and then slow down the opening of attachments, in some cases they will not complete opening at all.

What security programs are you using?

I do not know what the hell is going on, I took out Messenger last evening, then i could not get into hotmail at all. Then reloaded latest edition of messenger, still no change.
I gave up and was going to look for a new email program today. Later in the evening i retried and guess what, all was working as normal. This morning all is still OK. I sure would like to know what caused the problem. I can only think it was something to do with my supplied ADSL although Internet was working correctly. Does this make sense to you?
Incidentally one of the things i tried during this fiasco was shutting of antivirus and firewire in turn but it did not make any difference to problem.

I've seen hotmail go down on occasion. It's usually resolved within a day or so.
Helpful hint: if you can't access it in different browsers, or other computers, but can access other sites, chances are good that it's not you.
