What Is Overclocking?

Yup, very simple, basic question.

Could someone define the word "overclocking" for me, please? I don't quite understand what it is, or what its purpose is in life.

The purpose of overclocking is to take a component of a PC that is slower and increase the clocks so that it has the same performance as a more expensive model. It is also done for fun and can be quite addicting.
