So i went to sleep last night and my computer was working fine. we've had some flash flood warnings and i thought my computer was connected to a surge protector...but my gf plugged it in straight to the wall a few months ago so she could plug in her xmas lights outside... :P
so this morning I go to use my computer and i smell a burning...something....maybe plastic....smells terrible.
so when I go to start my computer up i get a green light on the power LED followed by a long-short-short-short beep, in which the computer fan stops operating...pauses...and then tries again...and again it gives the same beep code.
I smelled the computer (mmm...sexy ;P) and noticed that the power supply seemed to be the source of the bad smell. This logically makes sense._IF_ there was a surge, it would the power supply AT LEAST...followed by any other components. So I head to buy a new power supply...
My former power supply was a 450W antec and so I head to the store and buy a 500W antec earthwatts power supply. After I install it and reconnect everything, I still get the same long-short-short-short beep code after I try and start it up....
Im in the middle of classes in my senior year of college and didnt relaly have enough time to figure out the root cause of this failure, but I _do_ need to get it going within the next week or so because I have 2 or 3 papers stuck on the hard drive that I need to graduate! Anyone have any ideas as to how to remedy this problem? It may or may not be caused by a lightning surge, since none of the clocks were blinking like the power had gone out. Also, Ive heard stories that if the lightning DOES hit your computer, it makes a REALLY loud BANG sound, which I would have heard when I was sleeping...but the computer doesnt work nonetheless.
Any ideas? Should I just take it to a shop and let them bend me over for repair costs?! ;P
any help greatly appreciated.
