Can't connect to Websites

I've got about a year old HP computer. I cannot connect to websites. I've re-installed windows, installed first IE 5.5 and then IE 6.0. I've even Removed and Reinstalled all Dial-Up Networking and TCP/IP Files per Q181599.

It's the same thing whether I dial up or if I try to connect through a LAN. Any Suggestions?????

First thing I always check is the ISP icon in DUN, by right clicking, properties, TCP/IP, and ensure "use default gateway on remote network" is checked. Another possible is:

Right now I'm using a lan connection on which 4 other pc's have no trouble connecting and bringing up web pages.

Your link is what led me to Q181599. I already did everything mentioned there first.

Had problem on 5.5, then installed 6.0 with same problem? You 'da man, but seems like a browser fix attempt before reformatting.

Is it resolving IP addresses?

I can ping any ip from a command prompt.

If going to a page from "favorites", it will put the proper address in the "address" box, but it throws up the "can't find server or DNS error" page. If I enter an address such as "www.excite.com" (without the http://), I get a "Red X" error box saying, "Internet Explorer could not open the search page".
If I attempt to open the search page, I get the same "DNS error" page.

Am sure you have tried it, but have you tried rechecking your TCP/IP settings (gateway/DNS) etc?
Seems like the DNS info is wrong. Can you connect to: http://64.58.76.229/ instead of http://www.yahoo.com/
Are you using a router? Try filling in the DNS information manually as well.

In addition .. you mentioned you had DUN as well. Run 'winipcfg' and see what your network device is .. is it your PPP Adapter or is it your eth device? Switch to the eth device and connect. Always a good idea to remove any extra devices unused network devices that you may have.

I am using a router for the LAN connection. All TCP/IP, in fact ALL network settings are exactly the same as other win98 pc's on the network. I cannot connect to a number IP or FQDN address.

Right now I'm not connected to a phone line, nor do I have an ISP set up in the DUN. When I run "winipcfg" it shows a PPP Adapter with no network info. If I switch this to NDIS 5.0 (NIC), the only other choice, it shows the proper network info but does no good.

Try removing everything from your Network .. every adapter and protocol. Reboot, then add ONLY what you need .. if you arent using DUN, then dont put in your PPP adapter or TCP/IP->Dialup adapter. Windoze is using up your PPP adapter as the default on every bootup.

OK.. DUN is uninstalled. PPP adapter is gone from winipcfg. Same results when browsing. The pc has (and never had) any problem browsing the rest of the networked pc's.

I've never seen this before.... even after a complete re-install of windows and internet explorer.

Open IE, select Tools, internet options, connection tab. Run the wizard from there, specifying your LAN as the internet. This will modify TCP/IP for your current connection, and if there's any other TCP/IP stuff in the window, make sure you remove it.

I got no freakin' wizard available.. it's greyed out. Maybe I'll just "wizz" on it myself. ;)
