I want to get the highest end video card - but I DO NOT game.
Currently I have an 8600 GT or something (512mb).

Would upgrading to say an 8800 Ultra or the top end 9800 series be beneficial in terms of image quality? I'm into photography and many of my images are shot raw (Canon DSLR) and I then process them to TIFF or JPG.

Money is no object but i'd rather not spend $500 on a graphics card that will do nothing for me in terms of photography and image quality.

Thanks

For anything video related (photo and/or video editing) I always suggest going with ATI. Their RGB-CYMK and CYMK-RGB conversion is next to flawless. The only cards from nVidia that are close are their workstation cards (Quadro series). And then ATI cards still out shine nVidia - even a consumer level card from ATI will give you better, truer color than a nVidia workstation card.

I'd look at some of the high end HD cards from ATI or their FireGL workstation cards.

Now if money is truly no object, take a look at the 3DLabs Realizm cards. Those are just nasty (in a good way).

And before everyone jumps on the nVidia bandwagon - let me say this. Every video professional I know (and I know plenty) use ATI cards in their editing. Same holds true for photographers. And it's all because of color.

So which ATi card would you suggest?

Any of the HD cards are great. But if your serious about any sort of photo/video work and flat out need CYMK = RGB, then the FireGL cards are the way to go. But the HD cards aren't far behind.
