Have set up two password protected subdirectories on my site using the site cintrol panel. Downloaded Smart FTP and not sure about the permissions page.
Please explain "user", "group", and the "number" that can be typed in the box above the permissions check lists.
I want the people that have access to the particular subdirectories to be able to read and write, but not delete------for now, until I get a grip on how all this works.
Thanks

Well a few things.
1.) If you setup password protected directories using control panel those are most likely http (web) rather than ftp .
2.) Smart FTP doesn't control permissions. Permissions are generally set based on the directory that you are in.
3.) Understanding file permissions link is here (http://www.ss64.com/bash/chmod.html).
4.) Giving someone R/W permissions allows delete as well. You could set permissions so that they could only delete their own files though.

Thanks for the explanations and link.
It appears you are correct about the HTML rather than FTP. When I set them up using control panel and then looked in Smart FTP, I noticed that the directories were not in public_ftp directory and I found that a bit odd. Should I just move those directories from their current directory to the public_ftp directory?
Looked and did not see a definition of "group". Probably just missed it, it was late.........
Thanks
