Firstly, I'd like to give thanks where thanks are due. This was my first new build. I had the BYOPC guide from this site open on my laptop through the whole thing and I couldn't have gone smoother. I've never been happier to see a "insert boot media" message in my entire life. Thanks to creators and maintainers of this site and that guide.

I got the whole thing assembled and it booted normally (for a PC with an unformatted HDD) on the first try (score!). I got Windows installed without any trouble (score!), updated some drivers, and turned it off to install the sound card. Here's what I'm working with:

MoBo: GIGABYTE GA-MA790FX-DS5 ATX Ultra Durable II

SoundCard: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer PCI Interface Sound Card

When we try to run the install disk that came with the card it doesn't detect the card. When I look for the card in the device manager it isn't there.

Unfortunately, I'm at work now and not at home so I'm looking for hypotheses as to what I've done wrong. I'll check them out one by one when I get the chance.

Thanks in advance.

Make sure the card is completely installed.

Get the drivers from the creative website. Install them, and then see what happens.

What version of windows?

I'm pretty sure the card physically placed correctly.

I downloaded the up to date drivers from the website and had them burned on CD. I tried the drivers that I DL'd and the drivers on the CD from the box. Both were unable to find the device.

I'm using WinXP Pro x64 (SP2).

Question: The graphics card I'm using (EVGA GeForce 8800GTX) is in a PCI-E 2.0 slot with it's own power supply. Do MoBo's need a separate power lead from the PSU for powering the PCI-E slots? If so, that's going to be the problem. I didn't install any power leads to that part of the board.

I don't believe that card needs a separet power source.

Might want to try a different pci slot.

And you don't have to burn the downloaded drivers to a cd. You can just run them from the folder you downloaded them to.

I downloaded them on a different compy before I finished building the first one. That's why I burned them.

I'll try moving it to a different slot when I get a chance. Hoping it's not DoA.

Shadowpr, your suggestion worked.

I changed PCI slots and it was detected by the OS without any problem. The software is installing and updating as I type.

Thanks for the timely and correct (score!) answer.

Next question,... do you think this means one of the PCI slots on the MoBo is DOA?

I would return the motherboard then, especially if it's new.

I just like everything to work completely when i get it.
