I replaced ASUS p4s533-e mobo and intel p4 1.8a ghz with ASUS p4v800d-x pt880 (ultra skt 47 8/8x & pci-e/nib) and p4 3.0e prescott 3.0ghz. It was my first build from a few years ago and wanted to update a bit without having to start from scratch with a new build ($$$). Using ati radeon x1650pro agp 8x/4x.
In the bios setup, I chose agp as primary graphics adaptor, disabled RAID, everything else is pretty much set to auto....(its best that way for me:) )All other hardware that that was installed on the p4s533 (i.e. memory, pci cards etc...) are installed on the new board.
Checked and rechecked all connections and started. System won't boot normally or to safe mode. Went thru the bios several times just to check if there was anything i missed( back to that "set to auto" thing again) and came up with nothing...which doesn't mean its all configured correctly:confused:
I have no idea where to start to troubleshoot this and any suggestions would truley be appreciated, thanks....tminz

here's a little more info. Followed the instructions as your link instructed Ezy, and repair was not an option. Its not showing that i have OS installed to repair. States that the drive needs to be formatted?? Remembering when i first installed/formatted the hdd using fdisk i set up two partitions(approx. half and half) on my WD 320 gig hdd. partition 1 is where i installed th OS. Partition 2 simply storage.
just ran fdisk via a win98 start up floppy to view the partitions and they are not there!! fdisk shows 1 partition of app. 16gig. heres what fdisk shows:
partition........c:1
status............A
type............pri dos
vol lable.......BLANK
mbyte.........BLANK
system........unknown
usage..........BLANK %
*where the "BLANK" appears indicates there is no entry.
What happened to my partitions? In the bios it recognizes the hdd as 320 gig. I have a 2nd hdd (maxtor 60gig) as the slave. Jumpers on both drives are set to cable select.(tried it as Master and slave as well..same result)
I'm thinking if i can find those partitions, i'll find the OS and my system will boot. or at least be able to repair the windows installation

FDISK is a DOS application......
system........unknown is due to NTFS (gusiing that the drive is formatted NTFS)
won't boot normally or to safe mode
What does/doesn't happen when you try to boot?
What error message are you getting?

Im getting the screen where it says We apologize....windows did not startetc. gives u the option to start:
safe mode
safe mode with networking
last known good configuration
start windows normally.
No matter which option i choose it brings me back to this screen.....until now.
unfortunately now its not bringing me to this screen at all. when i press the power button it goes thru post and then just black screen with an under score blinking in the upper left corner.

Well, i was able to start my system by installing the OS (XP Home) on the 2nd drive.reconfigured cables etc. to be the primary drive. The 320Gig drive as slave.windows recognizes 9mb of the 320gig. it also says that 9mb is the FAT file system. like i said b4.I originally formatted it in 2 partions with NFTS. Did I fry the drive?. did i lose all data on that drive? full blown panic mode here. stored all pics and home movies on the 2nd partion of that drive......my wifes gonna kill me! Oh please tell me that there is away to recover those areas of the drive...like an idiot no back, no back up exists

Click on Start->Run and type: diskmgmt.msc
What Disk Management say about the drive?
How many partitions do you see?
