If, like me, you cheered up when the price for Bio-shock dropped to $19.95 but still held off on account of the game's DRM you can now buy it happily : http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/06/23/2k-drops-drm-bioshock

I have one word: woohoo!
Hope they learned their lesson, and hope other companies will learn from their example.

Heads up !
They just canceled "some" of the DRM :
DRM is still there
They are only removing the Activation Limit. The DRM remains:
from 2k Elizabeth a 2K community Manager on the Bioshock Web site:
Our other methods of copy protection remain. You will still have to activate your copy, and you will still need to keep the disc in the drive. SecuROM has not been removed -- just the activation limits on number of installs and number of computers you can install BioShock on simultaneously.

It's an improvement but it's not enough.

How do you know which copies do not have DRM? Any patched to uninstall it?

The initial install servers are going to return "accepted" but you've still got all that junk on your hard drive.:(
It's time for a re-think.

Only some? boooo :(
Got excited too soon I suppose. It's on my "no purchase" list again until they get rid of it entirely (heh, course, my gaming machine hardware is about 5-6 years old now...that alone is somewhat of a deterrent for the moment. The UT3 demo was awful. I had to dial down the graphics so far down it looked marginally better than the original DOOM)

It's time for a re-think.Not sure I follow (I'm dead tired on a couple hours sleep) ... So, I have an uninstalled version purchased in November last year as a Christmas present. If I install it today, it won't have the same problems due to communication with their servers?

The number of install is now unlimited and it won't be calling home to be activated.
The rest of of the DRM remains in force.

To make sure I understand: my old uninstalled version will work the same as new releases.... I'll be upgrading my system in a week or three and I want to play that puppy! :)

Hey! get that nasty DRM out of me!
TwoRails: From what I understand, secuROM doesn't get uninstalled when the game is uninstalled, as it is rootkit-based, and needs to be removed manually. Sims 2 has a secuROM uninstall utility, however. Not sure if it would work with the bioshock secuROM instance.

I know... I know... :o -- But I will wait for my upgrade! After building only with AMD since my last Intel 486DX build, I'm going with an Intel Quad core and an ASUS Radeon 4850 vid card. That should woop my old X2 with an AGP card pretty good! :)
