Copying files on CD to desktop

Hey,

I bought a music cd today and tried to copy the mp3 files to my desktop in vista. I tried doing so and it allows me to copy the file but it won't play unless I have the actual cd in the drive. All the mp3 files on the disc is 44kb when I explore the disc.

So am I doing something wrong here?

You need the 'rip' the music files onto the hard drive using some kind of music/media player (I usually use iTunes, but I'm sure Windows Media Player or similar can do this).

Once you put the CD in, open your media player of choice, and you should see an import or rip option somewhere.

You bought an audio CD that has MP3 files on it? I thought audio CD's come with .cda files on them, which you would use a ripping program to convert them to mp3 and store them on your computer.

But yes they are cda files.

If you try to copy them straight onto your computer, it will only create shortcut because of piracy protection, and if it were to copy, it would occupy a lot of disk space. You need to use a music ripper. WMP11 has a decent ripper that can convert to MP3 and WMA of various bit rates.

I think for sheer ease of use I'd recommend CDex for ripping your audio cd's to your PC.
