I currently have an hour long recording in mp3 format, and would like to extract a 5 minute portion of the recording, saving it as a new mp3 file. I've never attempted this before, and wanted to know, is there an easy way of going about this?

You can open the file in an audio editing program like the free Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) editor, and basically highlight and cut out the parts you don't want. Then, save the remaining to a new file name. I'd work on a copy of the original, so you don't accidentally lose anything. Otherwise, it's a pretty simple process.

Open the file in Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). Then highlight the part you do want and then under the fiel menu click export selection as mp3. This way you will not risk altering the original.
