Any recommendations on a good router with better range and performance than the Linksys one we have now. It has to have wired capability as well.
What exact version WRT54G do you have? You may be able to use 3rd party firmware to enhance its capabilitites and range.

Version 5 with firmware 1.02.2
Version 5 is awful. Replace it with a WRT54GL, and you can use 3rd party firmware such as DD-WRT to enhance it.
In the meantime, update the firmware in yours to the latest Linksys version (1.02.5), it may improve it.

I have a quick question about the DD-WRT firmware. If I use that, would I still need to install the original firmware that the router came with?

No you don't need to use the linksys firmware, DD-WRT puts out updates. You can also use your V.5 router to install DD-WRT Their wiki has loads of useful information on installing their software on numerous types of routers.
