Hi. I'm building a computer for my friend and I get two beeps when I start the computer and there is no POST. The only idea is that he has an old mobo and his cpu is not supported. I guess I will have to update his BIOS. Please tell me what the two beeps mean and what I could do about it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
For IBM bios. Others may be different.

2 short beeps:
Initialization Error, DMA, ROM, Floppy, Serial or Parallel

1 long, 2 short:
Video Adapter or Video Memory

Hope that helps.

Hey again,

Sorry, didn't realize different bios = different beep codes. Check out this link for the major ones. You may want to bookmark it.

The cel 566 has a 8.5 multiplier. How are you setting this on the board?

Well. It turned out that he got the BE6-II version 1 mobo. which doesn't support the Cel. 566. http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/frown.gif I thought he would get the newer board. Anyway, I have the be6-I so we switched processors. I have the Cel 566 and he has my cel. 400. Now, once and a while when he boots, he gets a long beep and two short beeps. I think it has something to do with his Geforce256 32 mb. I don't know. Also, I cant get my new Cel 566 to overclock to 850. I have the golden orb on there and I'm using the abit SloKET. Any answers to the two statements in bold?
again, thanks for the responces.

The Cel.2 CPU needs a little more voltage to go to 850 in many cases. If the default voltage is 1.50 then run it upto 1.65.
In another post titled "see Cel2 see Cel.2 fly" gives more detail.

Well, I used the jumpers on the Abit SloKET and I can now run it at 850 MHZ! but my Quake III crashes. I have it at 1.95 volts. anyway, my friend still has his beeping problem. He will shut off his computer and when he tries to restart, he gets one long beep and two short beeps. He has to reboot about 3 more times to get it to work properly. Please help. Thanks.

1.95 is too high jet.. what's the temp of the cpu.

I don't know the temp of the cpu because I didn't install the temp sencer on the motherboard, but I will once I put some copper thermal paste on there. Does anyone know about my friend's problem??? Anyway, what should the voltage be?

This would probably depend on the voltage marked on the chip. Personally I wouldn't want to chance more than a 20% increase. If it's a 1.5 celeron, I wouldn't go past 1.8. Again, however, this may depend greatly on the core temperature induced.

The truest temp is usually found in the bios if your board has this feature.

Ok, Don't tell me any information about overclocking my new Cel. 2 566. I thank all of you for all the the other replies, but that is not my big problem. Anyhoo, my friend's computer has the BE6-II version 1. His CMOS always clears when he boots. He has to reboot about 3-4 times to get it running again. Each time it says, CMOS has been changed, hit DEL to enter BIOS. Please help. Thanks. http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/smile.gif

By the way, I'm leaving to Europe on July 6 so I want my system stable before I go. I also want to help my friend, I'm not gunna overclock until I get back from Europe http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/smile.gif, on July 22 or so. FYI, I'm going to Germany, England, France, Italy, Lichenstien (sp?), and others I can't remember. I'm on the Great Lakes Embasators of Music. So if I don't reply, I'm in Europe. http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/smile.gif

I DID IT!!! http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/biggrin.gif IT WORKS!!! http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/biggrin.gif. I got it all to work, here is what I did.

When I first tried to install the Cel. 2 566 into my friend's mobo. the BE6-II, it didn't work. Then I put in a cel. 400. That worked, but then I would get the beeps. I thought about it for a whole day, then I realized that on the Abit SloKET, everything was on auto http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/eek.gif. I set it to 66 bus and 1.5 volts. I put it in the BE6-II and it booted right up. http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/biggrin.gif. Then, I was in windose and it froze, I rebooted and it didn't post. I looked in and saw that the Golden Orb was shaking soo hard that it dislodged the CPU. I figured out there are 2 clip things on the Abit SloKET, so I clicked those and tried to move the CPU. It didn't move so I assumed the Orb wouldn't move it. Then I booted it and it worked. I rebooted 3 times, all cold boots, and they all worked. http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/biggrin.gif. YES!!! Thanks all of you. Could you guys tell me if the little clip things on the SloKET is so the CPU won't pop out of the Slot 1. The clips are on the top and bottom as you are looking at the CPU from the outside when it is on the board. Thanks.
