Want MAC OS

Hello all
Im an OEM builder and have built many many systems. However Iv never owned a MAC , there for im clueless when siting in front of one. What are my options on running a MAC OS on one of the many systems I have laying around the house.

Well, if one of those systems is made by Apple, you can run MacOS.

If not, there's no ... legal ... way to do it. It's a closed platform.

you could also use an emulator not sure if it legal or not. I have heard of some people installing the os normally but not sure how well it works

an emulator is just a skin. You will not get the same options as you actually get with Mac OS X. You cannot legally install OS X on a non apple computer. It is against the EULA.

Actually, the legality of the issue is being debated right now and you can read about it here (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10028726-37.html). So long as you buy your copy of OS X I don't see anything ethically wrong about it, Apple obviously doesn't want anyone to do that because they don't want its users to have to worry about hunting down and installing drivers and want to control the whole user experience by limiting os x to their machines. Oh, and I'm sure they don't mind taking your money to support their hefty margins (http://www.techvat.com/5-tech-companies-more-profitable-than-exxon-mobil.html). That being said, as long as you buy a legal copy of os x you can see the procedure for installing os x here (http://forum.osx86scene.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2008&st=0&sk=t&sd=a). And more about getting the latest revision of os x (10.5.4) to run here (http://recycledpapyr.us/2008/07/10/hackintosh-and-1054-upgrade/). It looks like a lot of work and I don't know about practicability of it but I've heard there is somewhat of a performance sacrifice.

I don't think it's illegal until a court in your jurisdiction rules on it. What Apple says you cannot do in an EULA is not necessarily illegal.

Actually, it's a binding legal agreement, so yes, it would be illegal.

The item up for discussion in the courts right now is if that part of the EULA violates anti-trust laws.



In answer to 1life2live4's original question, you would have to get a Mac in order to play with the O/S. If you're serious about it, I'd suggest picking up a used one somewhere, rather than getting a new top-of-the-line system.
