I have an P4 XP machine in the office that is pretty much dedicated to receiving faxes. The faxes are received over an older Zoom winmodem to the XP fax console and print automatically to a laser printer. It's been working perfect for 4 or 5 years without a glitch. I recently switched over to Time Warner Cable phone service since I have their cable service and added a second line for the fax. One line's for phone and the other's for fax only.

Now what happens is the modem will ring and answer the incoming fax, but after a few seconds will hang up and the XP console mesage will say, "an error occurred while receiving a fax".

The funny thing is, about 1 out of 20 times, the fax will go through fine. I'm thinking it's something on Time Warner's end but wondering if there's a setting or something I missed. Any ideas?

Try ditching the winmodem and get a true hardware modem that also can survive on digital phone lines.

Thanks g,
I didn't think of that; the old modem's for the analog world, right?. Can you suggest a model I can pop in a pci slot on my old Intel P4 board? If I recall, it's an 845 chipset. I'm an old USR man but I know times have changed.

BTW, this little Zoom modem has been passed down to 2 or 3 machines and never missed a beat!

USR is still the best. The cheap OEM USR true hardware PCI modems are long gone. For the price of a 5610 (the only one left) you can get an external, and that would be the way I would go.

You will also need a serial modem cable. The COM port will need to be set to:

115200
8
None
1
Hardware

The only better modem out there is a Courier, and those are 250 bucks.

g,
I found an external USR Sportster 5686-03 lying around (about 5 years old), would that work?

If anything will work, that will work. The one I linked to is just a later version.

Excellent, I'll give it a try.
