Wireless problems

I have a Shuttle XPC, nice little box that runs XP SP2 w/ high speed internet. All is well except when i try to connect to the network via the wireless card instead of LAN cable. When i click on "view available wireless networks" the list is empty, so i can't connect to my router, a Linksys WRT54G. I also have a laptop computer, which has no problems connecting to the same router via wireless. Any ideas?

I have installed a brand new WLAN card in the Shuttle box, because i need to put this computer in another room of the house, and i don't want to run a cable all the way to the router. But so far that's the only way i can connect to the net. Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

Have you tried turning off any firewalls you have, and even wireless protection like wap or wep.

See if that helps.

I shut down the firewall but the list is still empty

Is the wireless card displayed in device manager? Or do you see a yellow sign next to it?

Have you installed the newest drivers for the wireless card?

the card is displayed fine, all seems normal. I guess windows must have installed some default driver, because i didn't get any CD with the card. I checked on Shuttle's website but they are not availale for downloading. They show a software to configure the card as well, but didn't get that either. I bought this card straight from Shuttle, it came without a retail box, screws, antenna, software... Just a loose card inside a blank box... If i had known i could have gotten that off eBay!

Ok now, a friend of mine who has the same card just dropped by with his software CD. I uninstalled/re-installed everything and now the card connectes to the router. Signal strength is 100% and Link quality is around 80%. But when i unplug the LAN cable i still cannot surf wirelessly, even though it says i am connected! I have disabled the firewall and turned off any encryption for the router, to make it as simple as possible. Do i need to do anything else??

So even with the signal strength and being connected to the network, you can't connect to the internet?

Open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig/flushdns

That's right, even though it is showing as if i'm connected, i am not. It's even weirder because, when i unplug the LAN cable i am able to surf for a brief moment, and then the wireless connection stops working but still shows up as "connected". And no i'm not just surfing through my cache files, i make sure to open web pages i haven't visited recently.
I tried glc's command, it opened a DOS box for a quick second then dissapeared, but still no wireless internet here. If i reboot the PC and try to connect wirelessly again, it can take up to 10 minutes before the connection is made, but even then it only "says" connected, it doesn't actually is...

Did it say that the DNS resolver cache was successfully flushed?

Yes it was successfull, but still no connection. The fact that i could connect but only for a few seconds before being dropped off was hinting at a bad hardware/or some kind of compatibility issue, even though i shelled out the big bucks so that i would have the Shuttle card designed to go with the Shuttle PC.... I Shall know better next time... Just went out and got a D-link PCI card, installed it and got it running in less than 2 minutes... All is fine now, except i want those 24 hours of my life back!! ;)
