Hello all, I have been running 64bit vista home premium for a few monthe now with verry little trouble concerning compatability... However, I have recantly tried to play a couple of games. Nothing too complex, just not 64bit compatable.

Is there any software available you guys know of that will allow me to run these games in a 32bit envirnment ? Is this even possible?

Also I have noticed that there is a 32bit internet explorer and a 32bit control pannel.
What would they be used for?

thanks

Hmm... that doesn't really sound like it is a 64-bit problem. It sounds like either a driver issue or a Vista problem.

64-bit issues are usually hardware related, not software related.

I googled and found this article (http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=294498), you might give that a shot.

Anderson, what you do need is to make sure your hardware has the most current 64 bit drivers AND your not trying to get an old machine or a slower machine to run Vista 64.

I have an old game called Descent 3 made in 1999 that runs on Vista 64...and not by any kind of special tweaking or magic. Therefore it is not necessarily true that games must be written for Vista 64 in order to get them to run on Vista 64. So far, I have not found any Vista 64 incompatible games.

I have a couple dozen games, new and old loaded on Vista 64. So this old wives tale of Vista 64 not running older games or non-64 bit games is patently false.

I have found that with running some older games on Vista 64, that you have to start out with the lowest games setting and gradually increase those settings. Some older games just wont run at the highest settings under Vista 64...probably because they were never beta tested at their highest speeds because the hardware back then simply did not exist. Just speculating though.

To name just a few games I am running: I run Crysis, FEAR, Call of Duty 4, Assassins Creed, Halo 1, Half Life 2, Oblivion, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike and others all on Vista 64. Does Vista 64 step down to 32 bit processing in order to run a 32 bit application?...no idea. Perhaps someone else has that answer?

Don't give up on Vista 64 for gaming. In my experience it works quite well for gaming. Nothing like knowing your CPU is working at full throttle as a 64 bit processor plus DirectX 10 does make a nice difference especially in color, shading and other little details. I think that those who boast af XP as being better for gaming are quickly losing the basis for their arguments. Sure, XP is better at gaming for the older computers, but not for the newer computers.

Thanks much for the thoughts, I've never had anything but the best things to say about the people I encounter on here, always so heplfull when they know anything about my questions!

I will check out the article and see what can be done alanebro

and dave, I havent searched abroad one by one for my drivers, just tried to update through device manager when I put the build in my sig together this spring. i would think it should handle whatever I throw at it..........although I dont throw much at it... throwing things at computers is bad practice.....lol

Go ahead and throw. If it breaks, it needed to be upgraded anyway.

While I love my new Vista 64, I have found the device manager and any form of automatic updating for drivers to be lousy. If you have a problem with any program or hardware just google independently for a driver. Problems pop up frequently, but I haven't had anything yet that 5 minutes and a new driver couldn't fix (compared to days of grief when XP has a problem).
