My computer connects to the Internet throuth a cable modem, and the connection is always on.
I don't want the computer to be connected to the web all the time, so I need a free software that can close the connection, and later, using it to re-connect to the web again. Is there any such freeware, Thanks!

You could click on Start->Run and type: CMD
Then type: ipconfig /release
When you come back to the pc you can type: ipconfig /renew

If you are running ZoneAlarm then you can use that to disconnect and reconnect to the internet.
Whether you connect and disconnect or not, I'd recommend you run the connection through a router. Direct connections these days are security risks, a router acts as a hardware firewall.

Pretty sure you could just right click on the internet connection icon in the bottom right of the taskbar. Choose something like connection status, and I believe if you choose disable, or disconnect then that should work.
Why not just leave it on all the time though?
There are plenty of freeware protection available, and if you get a router like glc recommended then you will be good.

I can't find the internet connection icon in the bottom right of the taskbar. It seems there is few such freewares except ZoneAlarm. Running the "CMD/ ipconfig /release" is not a GUI windows application.

What operating system are you using?
EDIT: If using xp, try going to control panel > Network connections (or similar) > Status (or similar)
Start
Run
CMD
Hit OK
Type ipconfig /release in the command prompt window.

I tried the ipconfig/release yesterday with Vista Ultimate. Works fine except you have to right-click the Command Prompt and select "Run as Administrator" or the command does not run. Ipconfig/renew worked fine too.
Great tip.

I can't find the internet connection icon in the bottom right of the taskbar. .Control Panel>Network Connections.
Right click the "Local Area Connection" Icon and select properties, when the properties GUI opens check the box that says "show icon in notification area when connected", but as the others have said, as long as you have Windows firewall switched on and a good quality router you will be reasonably protected.
With out getting too involved most modems and routers have a firewall and NAT.
What modem and what router do you have?

Thank you all for help. After reading all the replies, I got the network connection icon, and I clicked the disable button on the connection status dialog to log off the web. It seems the easiest way.
