I have a laptop running WinXP Pro (on 2 separate partitions, one for work, one for home). The home partition all of a sudden (after a year of working fine) cannot access the internet. I'm on a wired/wireless network at home. The other partition is working fine.

I'm connect using a cable modem and a Linsys WRT54G router. I can access other computers on the network, but I cannot access the internet either wired or wireless. When I check the network status I do have an ip address. When I try to renew it it takes a very long time while trying to acquire network address. It eventually acquires an ip (192.168.1.xxx), but still no internet.

I thought maybe an infection, but I've run all kinds of scans and found nothing. I uninstalled all network adapters and let Windows reinstall them.

I'm at a loss as to what to try next. Any ideas?

Thanks.

1. Open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /flushdns

2. Assuming XP SP2 or later, at a command prompt type:

netsh winsock reset

Thanks glc.

I tried those commands and still cannot connect.

What do you see when you open the Command prompt and run ipconfig -all?

The correct syntax is - ipconfig /all

I've attached a screen shot of ipconfig. This was done at work. It has a valid ip address. Should mention also not working at work.

Do you have Zone Alarm installed?
Fix due to recent MS Update (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/support/techSupport.jsp;jsessionid=IHrP2pnBvk8Sbk0TmNQ8goSZp3tPzexjw3rBqF1aA1LBeNMFmVDV!-2090593796!-1062696903!7551!7552!NONE?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en)

No, I don't have Zone Alarm. Just Windows firewall, which I've tried disabling, and I still have the problem.

Just wanted to give an update on what I did. Couldn't find the reason for the sudden inability to access the internet. I ended up using Win XP's no-reformat, non-destructive total rebuild option which lets you do a kind of reinstall of Windows without losing any of the build, including installed software, user accounts, passwords, etc.

I found the steps to do this in an excellent article by Fred Langa in Information Week June 19, 2006. See the link below.
