PCMech very slow on DSL line at business.

I was at a friend's business and the PCMech website pages load VERY slow. The business has a DSL line on a network. Each page takes almost a minute to load. It only happens with PCMech and no other site. Any ideas?

I've got cable modem, and while it doesn't thae that long, this is the slowest site I regularlly visit.

What I can't figure out is the pages load very fast at home where I only have dialup. The DSL at the business is very fast and works great but there's some sort of major problem with the PCMech site. I just don't no which end the problem is on.

Ping it a few times and see if he gets any packet loss.

Could be a bad route between him/us.

do this start|run and type ping www.pcmech.com

The data sent from you to pcmech and vice versa isn't done in one chunk. It is split up into packets. Obviously at times some packets are lost meaning that some packets need sending more than one time this is called packet loss and the higher it is the slower the page will load due to the extra time needed to send the packets again.

AnalogX has a nice utility called hypertrace that tracks all the hops required to get to a web site.

I pinged this site and here’s what I got:

Packets sent: 4
Packets received: 4

Average round trip in milliseconds:
103ms.

Pages still take about a minute to load. And it only happens at this site. Any ideas?

Hi Ron:

The ping times is just one translation of how a server and the client are connected. There are a few other factors that must be taken into account. I will just brush upon a few. When doing a ping of pcmech.com you should also do a ping of ads.ad-flow.com or ad-flow.com pcmech.com also loads up the ads from that site and it may wait for the ad to get loaded up, which could account for a delay.
In addition, you should also check for the servers in between as well. For example check out: http://www.visualware.com/visualroute/livedemo.html
select a site closer to you and run a ping/trace to pcmech.com you see what affects your route.

And seeing as our ad host in their infinite stoopidity decided to put some stuff up with Active X scripts the last time I looked around the admin forum discussions, you might want to suggest that he turn Active X scripting off under IE Security.

Update after watching Screensavers last night. Went to www.pcpitstop.com and ran download test. My receive buffer was set to 2144 and my download speed was averaging 57 kb/s. Ran the PCpitstop Internet speed autofix and it changed my receive buffer to 64240 and my download speeds are now running 1455 kb/s and the PCMech site pages are flying now. I had been disappointed in my cable performance. I thought that it should be a lot faster but not having anything to compare it to, except my dial-up that regularlly connected at 26.4 (which it was a lot faster), I didn't know what to do. So Ron you might want to check out PCpitstop.

Hi Confused - I went to PCpitstop.com and tried both autofixes - the high latency and low latency (64240bytes and 32120bytes) and it slowed my cable connection from 1380Kb/s to 1120Kb/s and 970Kb/s respectively.

Anyway, I'm glad it helped you but oh well I'll stay with my 256960 bytes setting and 1380Kb/s download.

Yea it was a big help to me, but then again my receive buffer was only 2144. I like my cable now.
