Everytime vista boots, the 2 windows shown in "Vista_startup01.jpg" are on the desktop, after some fiddling around and using notepad.exe to open them I get what you see in "vista_startup02.jpg".
Just temperature logs from a couple years ago, these windows popped up a couple weeks after installing vista, which was about a month or so ago.
What is making Vista look at these files on startup? There is nothing in the registry that I can find and nothing in msconfig? Where else would vista have a command to try and open this file?
The files mean nothing and I can just delete them, but I found it odd that this happens and can't figure out what's causing it.

I have no idea.
What heppens if you delete the file? Do those windows still pop up when you start?

I would open the services tab under msconfig and see if anything is there, if not, just delete them and keep it in the recycling bin just in case something is amiss. If you have any issues, just restore the files.

What other programs do you have starting with windows?
{I just did a search everywhere for program.txt and it came up empty, so how is it still wanting to open it?)
Standby....
is there an easy to list the startup items without typing each one?

names abbreviated: (from startup menu)
Adobe
AVG
Java
Logitech
Logitech
magicdisk
MS sidebar
nvidia
nvidia
nvidia
pc booster
realtek sound
roboform
steam
windows def
yahoo mess
----------------------------
what i don't get is the data in that txt file is 2 years old?
---------------------------
while this isn't critical, it just doesn't make sense that these 2 year old files are being accessed and vista is essentially asking me what program to use to access them......just killing me to know whay it's doing this?
---------------------------
msconfig>selective startup>deselect services>reboot = still comes up
msconfig>selective startup>deselect startup items>reboot = does not come up
So it's something in the startup list?

Not sure, but would you be willing to try and stop some of those from starting up to see if it goes away?
If so, stop the following:
Adobe
Java
Logitech
Logitech
magicdisk
MS sidebar
pc booster
roboform
steam
yahoo mess

I think I figured out what's up.....standby...
------------------------------------------
opening windows defender listed this file or whatever it is and had it associated with nTune, so I disable ntune in the startup and now only ONE window, instead of 2 shows up asking me what program to use to open "program".
this is too damn strange!
------------------------------------------
Well I got rid of one of the 2 windows using this:

Now how to get rid of the other?
Still can't get rid of this 2nd damn window, wtf!
PCBOOSTER - some reason that program was accessing a 2 year old file and I only installed that thing a few weeks ago. Don't know why!
Download and run CCleaner and let it clean up your HDD and registry. The user interface is much better than the standard Add/Remove Programs interface. Plus, you can check out your startup programs. See if it can find these old files and get rid of them for you.
