Most here like AVG 8.0, I use Norton Internet Security 2008 and like it. I tried Norton 360 myself and had issues with it also. AVG 8.0 has a free version that works well according to what I read here. Avira is really good and so is NOD32.

AVG, Avast, or Avira's Antivir for freebie AV programs.
For pay AV, I've heard you can't hardly beat NOD32.
Of those "big 3" free antivirus apps, only AVG Free 8.0 also scans for spyware.

From their main page:
Avast! antivirus v4.8 represents a multi-award winning solution to virus protection, with anti-spyware and anti-rootkit software built in for added security. It is available free for non-commercial, home use and with its fast, automatic updates avast! antivirus is already being used by more than 50 million users worldwide to provide continuous protection against all forms of malicious software (malware).
I stand corrected. Thank you.
I also use ThreatFire- it is a free behavior based detection program that compliments a virus scanner. PcMag gave it an Editors choice and PcWorld rated it in the top 100 freebies.

I downloaded ThreatFire & it messed up my machine. Finally used a system restore to get past it. I won't try it again.

As mine. Wouldn't go past the desktop and locked up Task Manager and I couldn't even C+A+Del. I had to unplug the pc to shut down. After I removed Threatfire in Safe Mode, I found out it took out my IDVault USB device. It's useless now.

Thats the sad side of software, it works on 99% of the systems and the 1% it doesn't work on gets nailed hard normally.
So far so good TF, I have it on three pc's (two XP one Vista) and two laptops without problem. However, a Google search found the problems noted have been experienced by others.

ThreatFire has been nothing but a problem for me. If you use Comodo firewall then you get the same thing with it's Defense+.
