2 computers 1 dsl line

I have bell south dsl. Two computers using alcatel usb modems. Win me on one and win 98 on the other. I want to be able to use both computers with just one isp address. Not interested in file sharing,printer sharing,etc. Thanks, Russ

Get a combination router/hub. I use SMC Barricade, others here use Linksys and Netgear. Wired versions now run about $100.00. You will need a short straight thru CAT5 cable between modem and router and CAT5 cables between PC's and router and a NIC in each PC, about $10-12.00 per, or for a little more you can go wireless. Wireless router and wireless NIC's in each PC. Very easy to set up. Basically you are transfering the DHCP address to the router from the PC.

That would require that you get rid of the USB modem and use an Ethernet model, and put Ethernet cards in both computers. This is going to work a lot better than USB anyway.

I agree with glc, I use to share DSL between two computers using a USB modem and ICS (Internet Connection Sharing.) It worked, but it was slow, the USB modem was buggy, and it was annoying to have to have one computer on at all times. I called tech support and told them the modem was junk, so they replaced it with a nice Ethernet modem. I then got a router, connected the computers, and 5 mins. later I'm on the net without having to enter my password everytime.

I also have DSL but from Pacific Bell. Using Ethernet modem, I just got a router/switch and its great. As cheap as a 5 port switch is, go with that and not a hub. I guess its fine if you only have 2 connections, but for more I'd demand the switch.

Does the usb modem slow down the computer noticably.and what are the other down sides.Also could you recommend a dsl internal modem. Thanks ,Russ

You can't have both online at the same time with an internal either (at least not without making the machine the internal one is in a router).

USB dsl modems are notoriously unreliable, and the add-on routers out there don't support USB.

Look around E-Bay and the other hardware forums like DSLReports, Anands, Hardocp for a used ethernet modem. Get an ethernet, sell your USB, then get a router and two nics for about 150 dollars and you'll be ready to go.
