Through the government we get free access to McAfee. It comes with a "Shredder" tool which can re-write over data 10 times at the max. I don't feel that it completes the job but maybe I'm just impatient. I usually hit on cancel but it looks like it finishes anyway because I have to reformat the drive. Am I just too impatient?

Do anyone recommend a wipe program? I have personal information on my HDD and when I decide to sell it for a bigger one I would like to feel confident that no one will be able to read it.

I use the UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) as it has DBan (Dariks boot and nuke) and KillDisk

Either of those will zero fill the drive...DBan does it 3 times and Killdisk does it once...you'll still have to format it when it's done...

You could run dban a few times.

If it doesn't re-write over the HDD at least 7 times than it's not good enough to me. Does dban or killdisk write over it at least 7 times or more?

You could run it more then once.

DBAN can be configured in several ways. It can make 7 or more passes. It meets the RCMP standards.

It is the only freeware that has this approval.

I use wiebetech. Hook it up to the harddrive, 3.5, 2.5 or sata and zap it all. It leaves nothing but 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

DBan does work very well...I use it all the time...only time I do not use it is when i want a quick zero fill and then I use Killdisk...

lately I quit doing that unless I am getting rid of the drive...I just re-image if I need to...

Yes, a single Killdisk pass is a lot faster than a full DBAN run. The free Killdisk only does a single pass.
