Today out of nowhere I started to get hounded by the ANTIVIRXP08 anti virus program. I can't seem to get rid of it through add/remove programs. I gather that this is a rogue anti virus program that somehow makes it very difficult to remove.

Can someone please tell me in detail how to get rid of this program?

It is constantly popping up on my screen.

First, download the free version's. of malwarebytes at www.malwarebytes.org and superantispyware at superantispyware.com. Turn off system restore and reboot in safe mode and scan using both programs. If you are still having issues, post a Hijack This log for review.

That malware is a pain in the ass to get rid of, it took me forever to get rid of it.

Is your desktop hijacked with a biohazard symbol also? if so, use desktop hijack to get rid of it, this program, resets the desktop to the original settings in the registry.

None of these recommendations are working for me.

The darn ANTIVIRXP08 messages are constantly popping up on my screen. I get messages that fill up the screen and a small one that reappears everytime 10 seconds after I close it out.

In addition it has screwed up my display with huge anti virus warnings, and my display function in the control panel has lost its ability to select my display.

Any more ideas on how to correct this problem?

What do you mean by Hijack this log for review?

Your browser is hijacked as well as your desktop properties

Check your startup programs and turn everything that does not look right to you

You also have to run whatever Anti virus you use in safe mode, uninstalling the program through add/remove program is not going to work at all

It took me around 3 hours to get rid of that bad boy but it can be done without reloading your system

If you wish to remove the infection without re-installing then please read the sticky for posting a Hijackthis log: LINK (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=103171)

And please follow the advise usnavyretired gave you in his post.

Please be patient with my ignorance.

Question:
After I scan with a certain program don't I have to buy the program to get rid of the problem? In other words, what good does it do to just scan with a program?

Quuestion:
How do I recover the scanned program while in safe mode?

Not with AVG you do not. Its a 30 day trial of all the full features that the free version does not provide.

You reboot your system hit F8 repeatly until you get list of safe mode options.
Choose the top option, safe mode, you will see a huge list of text then an option box will appear with a yes or no,choose yes and then click on AVG and let it scan, the more files you have the longer the scan will take, once its completed, run spybot

The free version of Malwarebytes will scan and remove with no restrictions. It's good enough to remove that particular malware, you don't HAVE to use AVG.

usnavyretired-- I followed your instructions in detail and it fianally got rid of the problem after I ran the scan in full scan. Running in quick scan didn't do the job.

I owe you all who contributed to solving this problem a great deal of thanks.

Subsequently I spent a lot of time in safe mode to correct other problems like my display and this resulted in new problems.

Now when I restart my computer after I get the first appearance of the XP image on the screen the monitor goes black and stays black no matter how long I wait.

Trying the different options that come on the screen when I initiate safe mode like restart normally or restart to last good configuration doesn't correct the problem.

In addition trying system restore doesn't permit me to select any days earlier than today.

Can someone tell me how to obtain more options on the system restore date? And how to get my monitor to work properly again?

Thank you all very much.

Try reinstalling your video drivers.

did you try safe mode with vga? This turns on basic video drivers, so you can troubleshoot your video issue

If that doesn't help, do a repair reinstall of XP.

What is the detailed procedure for reinstalling video drivers?

How do you run safe mode with VGA? I don't know what VGA is, where to find it, how to run it in safe mode, or how to troubleshoot with it? I need more detail. I am not that familiar with computers.

To run it in VGA mode, press F8 to get the boot menu and choose Enable VGA Mode.

Can you provide us with basic system specs? If this is a name brand system, we need the brand and exact model.

That's a shame.

Please let us know how much it cost to cure that issue, hopefully nothing outrageous.
Some places don't have the patience or the knowledge to remove viruses, make sure they don't reformat your drive, because that issue you have does not require a reformat

I just had this on my system and I installed SpySweeper, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware & Spybot S&D and I was able to get rid of it. I boot in safe mode and scanned with each one.

You can also boot into safe mode and dis able all the startup programs to prevent all the numerous pop ups

I just fixed another system the other day with this same issue, what a pain in the ass.

That just sounds like a temp fix.

No, its the first step of the entire process, until you run all the scans. It just disables the pop ups until you are able to get rid of the virus.

Once i do that i scan the drives with the same software you mentioned then I go into the registry and delete the startup programs that do not belong there

Alright, thought that one step didn't sound right.
