A week ago wed I had triple set up (phone, internet, hdtv) with Verizon Fios ( fiber optics) After the set up for internet. I found that it takes from 3-7 min just to bring up the shut down choice window. Once selecting shut down or restart it still takes a couple of min to do the final task. Does anyone have the same problem or any ideas on how to speed up the shut down time. The start up doesn't seem to be effected. Thanks for any help.

Windows sends a termination signal to all hardware and waits for a response, if I forget to unmount my external harddrive or flash drive I have noticed my machine will take a few seconds longer to shut down.
If your phone or hdtv is linked to your machine or the router in any way try shutting it down first, maybe windows is waiting for a term signal response from them and they don't know how to send one.

very interesting, never thought about the other external devices. I do know every thing is sent through the router and of course the router is set up to the computer. I wonder if there is a way to make it shut down faster? I know that verizon know what is going on with everthing on this line set up. So, I wounder if they can reboot the router or do some kind of readjustment? I do have a ticket in to them, but I came here first for the answers. Thanks for the help, anyone else have any idea's that would be great.

In this case, the culprit is going to be any software that Verizon may have installed on your computer.

This is one of my complaints with most major ISP's. I call it the AOL syndrome. They are trying to do 2 things - make everything easy for novices, and lock you in to their content and advertising. There are very few ISP's where you *HAVE* to use *ANY* of their software to use the Internet. The only ones that I'm aware of where you MUST use their software are AOL and Netzero. All others, it's optional. Web browsers are web browsers, and e-mail clients are e-mail clients.

Unless there's something about the FIOS where your computer is controlling the phone and/or TV, you can uninstall any and all software provided by Verizon. The Web can be accessed with any browser, and your e-mail can also be accessed with any Web browser or any standard e-mail client such as Outlook Express. I'm pretty sure that any service login is stored in the router.

If I'm not mistaken, Verizon tries to lock you in to MSN services. Installing their software has probably made MSN Explorer your default browser. AT&T does the same thing with Yahoo.

thanks for the info, there are 4-5 icons on the deak top, everything from install Fios to e-mail and help. I'll do a restore program and then uninstall the programs and see if that sppeds up thing. Thanks again for the help. I did tell the tech who set this up to use IE for broswer. I'll let you know how things go. Come to thing of this, the tech said it would be better to us outlook for e-mail. Is it hard to set up, and do most users us this program?

Outlook Express is very easy to set up. All you need are your account and server settings.

Well, gave it a try. Deleted the Icons into a file and copied it and the verizon file to dvd just in case. Went in and tried to delete program and got " Cannot delete, MccitrayApp.exe Access denied". So at this point looks like I'm stuck with it. I contacted Verizon and all the did was give me some test to make sure the equipment was working ok. Got any idea's?

Umm - you don't delete programs, you uninstall them - use add/remove programs.

That's used to access the Verizon online help. Use task manager to terminate the process and try uninstalling again.

Ok, I'll give it another try. I tell you, the shut down time is becoming longer and longer. At least 7-10 mins. long.

GLC, Got R Done! It took me a better part of 1hr to uninstall 3 programs from Verizon. Had a couple of lock ups during the processes, but got it completed. Restarted and checked getting on line worked well and then shut down only took 20 to 30 sec and done. Thanks for your help, it makes it easier to do get things done with help from you and the other members of the forum.
Thanks again,
Jim
