when xp loads, there is a blue bar that scrolls across the box in the center of the screen.
all my other systems boot after the 6 or the 7th bar,
this system takes about 47 bars before xp loads, I think a bad HD is the cause of that,
the second problem is if I try to run the defrag program with xp or diskeeper Lt, both will go to the BSD and reboot. will a few bad sectors on the HD cause this ?
I also just added some ram to give me a total of 2 gig.
other than the above problems, everything is running just fine, I have run every program on the system with no problems, runs fast too.
ran memtest86+ with no problems also.
almost forgot:
ran the WD diag and it found some bad sectors that it said it may repair, I clicked ok and it finished it and then went to the BSD.

have you tried chkdsk -r from the recovery console, I've always had good luck running spinrite if you have access to it. Spinrite takes some time to scan though it is very thorough.

If it found bad sectors, then I believe that could be the cause of your problems.
Might want to back up everything and see about warrenty replacement.

well I did run the check disk thingie in my computer, c: drive properities, tools, clicked the bottom bloct to attempt to recover bad sectors, it ran for a long time but fell asleep when it finished so I don't know what it did or didn't do.
the drive is about 5 yr old so no warranty there and I cannot do any back-up without crashing.
so I did copy everything to one of my other computers that I needed to save, and ordered a new drive. I'll just have to install xp when it gets here, no problem.
I was just wondering if the other symptons ment anything differant.
I used to have a copy of spinrite many years ago in the days of dos, on a 1.44 floppy, and yes it is a great program to have.
gonna have to buy a new one I guess.
thanks

Once you get windows installed on your new drive, try adding this old drive to the system and seeing what personal files you can copy over.
If there's data you need to recover, Spinrite will probably fix it up good enough to get the files off it.

thanks for the info, some day I should buy it, I don't keep anything I need on a drive, I always burn it to a cd or a cdrw, plus as many systems I have plus the portable drives, I have duplicates of everything, its a normal thing to do that I learned many years ago.
what does make me very angry now is that avg just wiped out all my stored ati drivers and the set up software for the all-in-wonder video cards that was on this computer, plus the other computers, and now I am unable to even download them from the amd web sight.
so far I have 3 good working cards stored in in the orginal boxes, and can't use for anything, plus the one that is in this computer right now, now thats a lot of money going to waste.

well today I broke down and bought spinrite and have it running now on the bad drive, the very first sector is bad and unrecoverable, after that its running smoth, so far.
it still got about 22 hrs to go to finish the 160 gig drive, its at 4 %.
I got a new sata 80 gig drive to replace it, maybe I can do the switch some time tomarrow.
it just changed to 19 hrs while typing this.

yes, but I am picking up some speed, its now at 70% and just 2 hr to go.
still only found one bad sector so far.
while waiting, I started to clean shop a bit, like get rid of some old floppies from the dos and w3.1 days, I got a lot of them, and the ones I can peel the lables off are getting formatted and recycled.
I even found one of my very first 1.44 floppy disk, it's a 720 with a hole drilled in the other corner, and the darn thing still formatted at 1.44.

ok the results with spinrite is one red U and one green R. the U in in the second block on the display, and the R is near the very end of the display.
seams to me that if that is all that checks bad on a 160 gig drive, I can't see tossing it.
but I am going to replace it with the 80 gig sata drive I just bought.
next question, will the free download of true image let me back up the 25 gig of used drive sapce on the 160 gig drive so it can be restored to the 80 gig drive ?
the backup will be placed on the portable usb drive.
also I can't find that $10.00 special offer, maybe it is over.
Yes, if you have finished a Spinrite run, you should be able to get a successful clone. If cloning to a smaller drive, you will have to use the expert options to resize the partition. Clone directly to the new drive, don't go through the USB drive.
You need to toss the drive - once you have bad sectors, they will only get worse.

does the free trial download allow you to use the advanced options ?
I believe the trial is fully functional, it's just time-limited. Download and install it, then make the rescue boot media and do the clone with that, not within Windows.

well it did not go as smothly as I expected.
I now have a new installation on drive F the new sata 80 gig drive.
I also have a fresh installation on drive C the old 160 gig drive that is bad.
I disconnected the old drive C and now would like to change the currant drive letter on the new drive from the F to a C.
how do I do this
by the way all the info is still on the C drive, nothing lost yet.
That's what happens when you try to clone in Windows. Clone only with boot media and disconnect the old drive before trying to start the new drive into Windows.
