I just built my first system and want to get a good anti virus program for it. Which one would you guys recommend? Preferably a free one.Thanks.

AVG is highly recommended around here while there are other good ones, like Avast, too.

In most testing I've seen the free app's work just as well as the paid versions.

Ok thanks. Are the ones you pay for a lot better?No, not better...just more convenient. More automated features and such, but not really better at virus detection and removal.

I use AVG Free.

I would also consider installing Spybot and using the immunize feature as to block many infections at the source - you'll have to update this regularly but it's easy enough.

I'd also install SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) to help keep your system free of spyware.

Exactly, my comment was in reference to spyware, which is more of a problem than the 'good old' virus we used to have.
