I've got McAfee and it's rubbish. AVG free is the way to go evidently, but how should I smoothly move from one to the other? Install AVG first then uninstall McAfee? Obviously, I don't want to have any period of time connected to the internet without any anti-virus... and I need the internet to install AVG obviously. Any advice? Muchos gracias!

Download AVG.....
Get off the internet
Uninstall McAfee
Install AVG

I'd throw in a CCleaner scan between the uninstall and install steps.

I would recommend Avira's Antivir (www.freeav.com) and not AVG. It is free for personal use and it takes very little of your PC's resources. Don't even try to install 2 antivirus softwares together (your system might fail to boot properly).

There's no problem having several anti-virus products on your computer as long as only ONE is set for real time protection and the other/others are used for manual scanning. As TwoRails suggested, run a CCleaner scan for both the cleaner and registry. McAFee can be just like Norton and do a real lousy job of uninstalling itself.
