Just got this SATA/IDE to USB device from newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002
It does not power up the hard drives. The part that connect to the outlet strip has a green light that comes on, but the drive is not powered up. I put the drive into my PC to make sure it wasnt the drive, and it powered right up. Tried it on one other drive with same result, no power. So is it DOA?

I assume you made sure the connections were tight. If you did, then I would guess DOA.

I've had one of those and for about 1 1/2 yrs. and it has always been problematic. Sometimes it worked and some times it doesn't. I had the first one replaced but the second was no better.

I bought one a few years ago. It always powers up the drive, but whether or not the computer recognized it or for how long was hit and miss. I thought getting a different one would help. Maybe its worth the trouble to just put a drive inside the PC rather than deal with these devices.

I have this one: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=2020&cpc=SCH
And have had no problems with it at all.
Vantec is crap. The Geeks unbranded adapter is a better bet.

Vantec is crap.
NOW you tell me. :D
Got a challenge for you, NI - if you can find anywhere in this forum where I have *recommended* anything made by Vantec, you will get a gold star! :D
