I am stumped. Hard drive was given to me, no history other than it came out of a wd mybook home. The drive spins when powered up. It is not recognized in management and the wd diag tool does not see it. I have tried different jumper settings. I am trying to do this through an external case, usb connect. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm going to guess you are using Windows XP or Vista as your OS. Can you see the drive in Disk Management (Right Click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management)?

Sorry, yes xp pro. Not recognized in management or the wd diagnostic tool.

Remove the jumper completely. This is for "single" operation.

If you open up your system and hang it on the IDE controller and jumper it to CS, is it seen?

I have tried removing the jumper. Thats just it I don't want to move the computer and put it internal. I have other puters but they won't handle 500 gb. If you are saying that's my only choice then I will try that.

Your other choice is try a different USB adapter - and try a different drive in your current adapter. You have to determine somehow whether the fault lies in the drive or the adapter.

What is the make and model of the external enclosure you are using? Are you still trying to use the WD Mybook enclosure?

Other hard drives work in the adapter. No it's not in a wd mybook, would like to use internal..
Cintre zdisc. Do not see a model number. Can it be the MRB?

If it is not the adapter that is the problem... then it could be the HDD itself.

You should try hooking it up to the motherboard through a IDE cable and see if the drive is detected by the BIOS and the OS.

It's not the MBR if disk management and the WD diags can't see it and a different drive in the same housing is seen. It's a dead drive.

I thought if the drive would spin there was hope. Can you tell me what else could be wrong. I am trying to learn here. Thanks.

Just because it spins doesn't mean anything. If it's not seen, the interface is bad.
