I have this old PC, AMD Socket A 1.4ghz and 768mb of RAM, its a Micron PC with windows 2000. Every time I open disk defrag to try to defrag the computer it crashes the system and requires a hard reboot. Also when it analyzes the disk almost all of it is red but I have 92% free disk space. Where should I start?

I tried to defrag in safe mode and it pegged the CPU at 100% and then crashed.

Down load this program, its free, http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download. Give it a try, I've never used this program but several here have and say it works ok. Hopefully this program won't crash your computer.

I've had good luck with "Diskeeper"

Thanks for the help, I got it defragged with auslogics. Now windows defrag sees the drive like it should.
You might want to run chkdsk /r - you may have a lot of corruption and/or bad sectors. A good cleanup with something like CCleaner sure wouldn't hurt either.

Run chkdsk /r once, and try again.
Or try with Diskeeper which usually works without any problems. Current free trial version is 2009 on their website and will run as a full featured version for a month.
Unlikely, but could also be a malware/trojan, if the CPU is at 100%. Wouldn't hurt to run a scan once.
Lastly, may want to check if the drive is alright. Has it downgraded to PIO mode?

It quickly defragged with the windows defragger after and there is no viruses/malware because it was a work station at a company that had good anti virus. I am running avast and spybot and it sits idle at 0% CPU usage. Also I ran CCleaner and I'll run chkdsk when I get home from school.
