Hi, I just got a 1tb WD elements external drive off newegg which I immediately plugged in to realize the disk seems to spin off axis, throwing the balance all out of wack when you pick the drive up. It seems to work fine, but the way this drive is behaving is distinctly like the last WD mybook I had which was dropped on the ground and later started spinning in an odd, uneven way. It feels like your handeling a big magnet it something the way the drive seems to gyrate around in my hand as I turn it. Has anyone experienced this, and is it indicative of a drive that needs to be returned?

It doesn't sound like a good thing. A better solution to external drives is an external enclosure and an internal drive.

If it vibrates like that it is clearly bad...return it. Drives do have a bit of a gyroscopic effect, but not like that. A healthy hard drive does not do what you described. Exchange it for a Seagate, in my opinion.
Build your own.

Drives will have that effect, anything spinning at a high velocity will. If it i doing that while on a flat surface though something is wrong. If you have to hold it and move it around to get the effect then thats normal.
IMO, WD quality is as good as Seagate.
