Hey folks,

I have a Lite-On DVD-RW drive that I bought for my build this past summer. Long story short, I don't use it often, but when I do it is extremely slow. It would take forever to read a disc such as a DVD movie or a DVD game. Sometimes it doesn't even read at all while the lights light up and I hear the disc spinning.

This is getting frustrating, today I tried popping in a DVD movie and it took forever to read the disc, about 10 minutes. Then when I tried playing it in a media player, it would freeze my system.

I've never had this problem with my other DVD players.

I'm thinking of two possible problems:

1) The drive is defective and I should RMA it for a new one.

2) When I installed the drive for my new build, I didn't go through with proper procedures? I hooked up the drive and installed appropriate drivers. Anything else that I should have done like the settings in bios, etc?

Any thoughts would be nice.

Thanks.

No drivers are needed. Is the drive IDE or SATA.
See if the drive is in DMA Mode. http://www.tweakxp.com/article37063.aspx

You might want to try a different cable, or port. See if that works.

If not, it sounds likethe drive is dying, and it's time for a new one.

Sorry I forgot to mention it is an SATA drive. Would the DMA mode still apply to SATA?

No, DMA does not apply.

Is your SATA controller running in IDE, RAID, or AHCI mode?

Last time I checked in bios it was ide mode. I tried to use ahci mode but my pc crashed so I used ide.

It crashed because you didn't install Windows in AHCI mode.
