I have Win98 on CD and a start up disk. How do I get Win98 on the Hard drive to get the computer up and running? Do I begin with a C prompt?

No, you don't install at a c prompt.
OK,
here's what you do; boot with the startup disk and select "cd rom support"
You will eventually be returned to an "a" prompt.
Put your WIN98 cd in now.
Type in e:setup (assuming you only have one hard drive with one partition and one cd rom drive. The "e" drive is a temporary "virtual" drive. Then just follow the set up instructions on the screen.

I forgot to add the above advice assumes you are starting with a properly prepared and formatted hard drive with no data on it. This usually involves "fdisk" and "format" commands.
Post back if this is not the case.

Suppose I would like to format the HD. Can I do this using the start up disk or how can it be accomplished?

Hi Traumamedic,
Since you have the Win98 start up disk, you can use it to prepare your hard drive for use. You'll have to run fdisk first and then follow with format. Place the floppy in the a: drive, boot up your PC, choose option 2 for now (Start without CD-ROM support). At the a: prompt, type fdisk. Click on this link and follow the instructions: http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/step/25/
When you're finished running fdisk and format, restart the PC with the start up disk again, but this time choose to Start WITH CD-ROM support so you can access the CD-ROM drive. Place the Win98 CD in the CD-ROM drive, from the a: prompt, type in the drive letter that represents the CD-ROM drive and the semi-colon and hit Enter. From the prompt that represents your CD-ROM drive, type "setup" (without the quote marks) and hit Enter. Setup will start the installation of Windows. Follow along as it will ask you to input some info, select options and stuff.

Actually, if you do only fdisk and not format, Win98 will go ahead with that task [format] before the install. The first thing is to boot up ... and that could be from either the cd-rom or floppy, depending on the boot sequence in the BIOS.
