When installing a HP Office Jet All in One Printer on a Windows XP Media Edition workstation, I ran the HP printer install disk and get this message:

Issues stopping installation

Issue:

USB.inf

This file does not exist or is the incorrect version and is required for installation to continue.

I spent some time on Microsoft's web site looking for a newer version, with no luck. The workstation is two years old. I also searched the workstation and cannot find another version.

Surely this cannot be that complicated, eh?

Any suggestions?

Download the USB.INF file from the link below--Unzip the downloaded file and extract the "USB.INF" file to the C: / Windows / inf folder.

I did just this, and discovered something interesting just as I tried to save it to the folder you mention above: I cannot find the inf folder within the C:/windows/ folder.

That is surely part of the problem, eh? I did a search of every folder within windows folder, didn't find it, tried to create one, and the system told me it already had a folder named inf.

Could it be a hidden folder of some time, or could I have unknowingly hidden it at some point in the past? I use lots of usb devices, and all of them work fine until this one.

You need to enable display of hidden and system files and folders in your folder options. While you are in there, I also recommend you unhide the extensions for known file types.

My apologies. Yes, it is a hidden folder.
With the Windows folder open clik on "Tools" / Select "Folder Options" / "View" / "Hidden Files and Folders" / put a tick in "Show Hidden Files and Folders".
